Movie Captioning Update from Alan Kutner
Chairman, Movie Captioning Committee, Hearing Loss Association of PA.:

I am happy to report that the fourth largest movie chain in United States, and the second largest movie chain in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Carmike Cinemas, has finally installed captioning in all 12 of its movie theaters in the state of Pennsylvania.

You may recall that I met with their general counsel in Philadelphia last May to discuss why they had not yet started to install captioning. As a result of that meeting, I informed you that it was my impression they would be changing their goals and would comply with the ADA, the Harkins case and its progeny.

Over the ensuing months I have been e-mailing them, inquiring as to their promised progress.

I am now pleased to advise you that this week I was informed by their Director of Marketing that all 12 of its Pennsylvania theaters and all of the movie screens within them are now using CaptiView captioning devices. They are now engaged in meetings with Captioned Fish, Fandango, and the their own website to inform the viewing public of the changes. I think we can feel very proud of ourselves that we were instrumental in getting this movie chain to adhere to the ADA requirements, and provide closed captioning for our deaf and hard of hearing friends in rural areas throughout the state of Pennsylvania (which is where Carmike Cinemas locates their movie theaters).

The following Carmike Cinemas. in Pennsylvania provide captioning all day every day for the deaf and hard of hearing:

Park Hills 7 Altoona
Carmike 8 Altoona
Cinema 7 Chambersburg
Clarion 7 Clarion
Laurel Mall 4 Connellsville
